WHY got the same pronunciation with the word “歪" in Cantonese, which means slant, inclined, or awry. The word “歪” also shares the same pronunciation with English letter “Y", which is also the first letter of the designer's nickname, Yan. The brand “WHY” aims to explore different phenomenon and emotions around our life. It engages the wearer into a journey of discovery through the collection. The essence of the design is built upon “contrast", “contradiction" and "timeless beauty".
ABOUT THE DESIGNER - KA YAN LAM
Lam Ka Yan founded her private label "WHY" in 2016, and her design style is heavily influenced by the classic 90s in Hong Kong. Yan is a locally-trainded fashion designer who received her Higher Diploma and Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design and Product Development in Hong Kong. Yan was one of the finalists of Young Talent Award Hong Kong in 2011, and her collection "Underground - The World Beneath Your Feet" was awarded the "Creativity Award" by Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association. Before establishing her brand, Yan has worked for other local fashion brands, including uuu…shooop!!!, Modement, and Classic Anew.
